Grianán of Aileach

Recording the ancient stone ringfort of Grianán of Aileach in County Donegal.

The 2018 Ireland expedition focused on Grianán of Aileach, the imposing stone ringfort overlooking the Inishowen Peninsula. The team documented the dry-stone walls, internal terraces, and surrounding landscape in cooperation with local heritage offices, producing an open-access report and a free public workshop.

About the site

Location: County Donegal, about a 20-minute drive from Derry city center across the border.

The Site: Perched on the summit of Greenan Mountain. It is an ancient royal ringfort with impressive dry-stone walls that are 5 meters (16 ft) high and 4.5 meters thick.

The Experience: You take a climb up the hill to reach the fort. Once at the top, you can climb stairs to walk along the internal terraces of the high walls and enjoy 360-degree views of Lough Swilly and Lough Foyle.
